This is a really helpful tool for figuring out how much time you have in the day. You pop in the number of hours you want to work, the amount of time you have dedicated to normal activities (email and such), and your to do list. It helps you determine which tasks to work on and how much you can accomplish in a day (make sure to schedule time for breaks and lunch!). Worksheet
At my current position, computing systems and services are widely distributed. As a smaller organization, we tend to outsource a lot of technologies that are not tied directly to our mission. This gives us a great deal of flexibility, but it also causes confusion around which system to use for different needs. I decided there should be some mechanism to aggregate them (an intranet). In order to address this, I first identified the services our staff uses on a regular basis: Then I started a project plan with a strong UX composition. Here’s the scope of work for the IA....
“Business Origami is a method that has been invented by the Hitachi Design Center. It uses paper cut-outs as symbolic representations of people, groups, channels and environments, to create a miniature model of a system. The cut-outs are placed on a whiteboard or a big piece of paper where the different areas, interactions and flows between the system elements are drawn.” It has the advantage of taking the physical environment of the user (and the business) into account while designing systems. I haven’t been able to use it as much as I’d like, but I will definitely use it again....
I created this map to let management more easily the information ‘sprawl’ that had been created by not having a central information management policy. The idea is to work with a committee to determine which tools are appropriate when. As an academic institution, there may be multiple answers, but making the picture concrete is the first step in understanding the issues. Information Lifecycle
Actually using the tools you support is a real asset as a learning technologist. I have been lucky to teach a few graduate courses for the UW – all asynchronous and online. The first two were done in Moodle (which is no longer in operation at UW, so I have no screen caps). These were for the Clinical Informatics program jointly offered by the School of Medicine and Nursing. One was a technology introduction, the other an introduction to databases. Currently I co-teach Information Management and Technology in Sports – I handle the IM, my co-teacher has a degree in sports...
